The Tubby Butcher | Curvy Tubby Thrives in Retirement!

The Tubby Butcher by Pitleco and out of Kia Ora Scene, was born at Cromartry Park in 2013. Trained by Meryl Hayley and Dean Cocivera, The Tubby Butcher began his racing career in 2016. With twenty starts, two seconds and thirds and $9,805 in lifetime earnings, The Tubby Butcher was retired from racing in August of 2018.

Following retirement from racing, The Tubby Butcher was rehomed to Shelby Woodhams after being highly recommended for his temperament and trainability by Shelbys friend, who worked for Meryl Hayley as a track-work rider.

“I wasn’t looking for an off the track horse, but I trusted my friend’s judgement as temperament is a really important quality for me in a horse,” Shelby said.

With help from friends and multiple coaches, Tubby and Shelby worked together to build their partnership. Although starting as a green rider herself, and the occasional moment of confusion, Tubby and Shelby have come along in leaps and bounds with everyone’s support and compete regularly in disciplines such as show jumping, as well as dabbling in dressage. Shelby stated that her greatest achievement so far has been competing at Yalambi and Geraldton Show Jumping Championships, where Tubby remained brave and responsive. Their long-term goal is to continue exposing Tubby to new atmospheres, gaining more experience and confidence in competition environments.

OTTWA wish Shelby and The Tubby Butcher all the best for the future!
