Wandulu | Sweet and Intelligent Leo

Bred in New South Wales, gelding Wandulu entered into the world in September of 2017. By Wandjina, Wandulu began his racing career in 2020, but soon retired after only four trials and one official start. Trained briefly by Neville Parnham, Wandulu was retired in late 2020 and rehomed to rider, Kirsten Baldwin.

Kirsten worked with Wandulu (Leo) straight off the track, where he received groundwork and the initial stages of his off the track retraining before being put out for spell. During this time, Kirsten made the decision to rehome Leo and advertised him on Rehome a Racehorse where he was purchased from by Lili Mustoe.
With Lili, Leo was used as a companion horse for other horses. When circumstances once more changed, Leo was then rehomed to Dempsey Collinson, where his off the track career began.
Purchased in July of 2021, Leo and Dempsey began to work together to train Leo towards a new career as an eventer and show jumper. Dempsey was impressed by Leo’s nature, naturally picking up things quickly and processing the information appropriately, which is a testament to the thoroughbreds’ intelligence. He is also a sweet natured horse, who often cares for young and nervous riders.
“He is unbelievably quiet and makes the perfect kids’ ‘pony’,” said Dempsey.
Together, Leo and Dempsey have had a successful 2023 season, attending the Avon Valley Pony Club Event, where Leo overcame some cross-country anxieties to finish safely. Having had her confidence knocked prior, Dempsey was very proud of Leo’s performance and continues to aim to produce a confident cross-country round at future events. Long term, Dempsey would like Leo to compete confidently in 80cm show jumping classes, as well as maintain his confidence in eventing.
“My greatest accomplishment with Leo has been the entire journey we’ve had so far,” Dempsey said fondly.

OTTWA wish Wandulu and Dempsey all the best for their future endeavors.
