Beat the Devil | Devilishly Handsome Lucifer

Following retirement, Beat the Devil was purchased by Robyn Newitt from the racing ownership group involved in Beat the Devils career. Robyn began groundwork, arena riding and trail riding with the gelding before spelling for six months. It was after these six months that “Lucifer” was sold on and purchased by Mara Coombes in April of 2021.

Working for Off the Track WA, Mara could not escape the allure of purchasing another off the track thoroughbred. Having owned a thoroughbred previously, Mara commented that she enjoyed working with this breed the most as she understands how they work physically and mentally. With this knowledge, Mara has enjoyed working with Lucifer (Luci) to create a balance between his brain and body.

Mara commented, “Some things he takes too pretty quickly. Other times, I need to sit down and think it through. That’s part of what I enjoy about training a horse; figuring out how to work through something they don’t understand in a way that’s calm and clear.”

Mara describes Luci as a busy body, who can become easily distracted. Despite this, Luci has taken to cross country well with confidence. He has also proven to be brave with jumping, if not a little lazy, and has the natural movement to become a great dressage mount. Once Mara has figured out the intricacies of Lucifers’ quirks, she believes he will make a wonderful all-rounder and competitive off the track competitor in eventing and show jumping.

Having now unlocked the key to establishing Lucifers’ expressive trot and large canter strides, Mara hopes to begin competing more in the New Year. Already this pair have attending several off the track clinics, endurance rides, training days and smaller competitions in preparation for their future pursuits.
