What Has Been Happening with Retired Racehorses in 2024
The OTTWA Passport, providing traceability and access to all OTTWA incentives, surpassed 4,500 horses within our registry. Of the over 650 horses who were claimed this year, approximately half were horses who had retired from racing in 2023 or 2024. It has been fantastic to see these horses transitioning into new homes after racing, and to follow along with their journeys.
More educational clinics were hosted throughout the year, spanning throughout Western Australia. With 17 clinics run by Off the Track WA and Equestrian WA, and 15 sponsored clinics hosted in regional areas, Off the Track WA were successful in our 2024 goal to expand our reach and provide education and support to retired racehorses across the state. Over 600 registrations to clinics were accepted this year, with new and recurring entrants utilizing the lessons on offer.
“Thank you to Off the Track WA for putting on such an encouraging and enjoyable day, these outings are absolutely invaluable and so helpful in transitioning a horse off the track.” – G. Lee – OTTWA Clinic attendee.
Sponsorship wise, Off the Track WA continued to support those who highlighted and provided opportunities to retired racehorses. With approximately 155 events sponsored, over 1,000 retired racehorses have been supported by the monetary contributions, prize money and merchandise provided through these sponsorships. 14 horses and their riders were also supported in their equestrians pursuits at National or International level, showcasing the versatility and talent of retired racehorses in their lives after racing.
“Being able to compete with my young thoroughbred at these events is invaluable, and the support from the Off The Track WA team for these events is so very much appreciated. As a rider, I appreciate the continued support for these horses as they transition from their off the track careers into other equestrian disciplines.” – S. Crowley, OTT sponsored event competitor feedback.
Through the OTTWA Community Fund, Off the Track WA supported 19 applications with programs and projects that utilize retired racehorses. From these applications, Off the Track WA supported programs such as Horse Sense, who provide equine assisted learning to children of disability and learning difficulties; along with financial support to projects that improve the safety and wellbeing for retired racehorses. The team are now reviewing applications for projects in 2025.
With such great feedback, we are eager to move into 2025 and continue on with supporting, promoting and rehoming retired racehorses.
