OTTWA Clinics | Magenup and Murray

November saw the last of the OTTWA Clinic series hosted south of the river. On November 10, Off the Track WA hosted an Encouragement Clinic at Magenup Equestrian Centre. With Rebecca Thomas and Don Hawkins coaching, we had a lovely day with some wonderful young and green retired racehorses.

Of the horses in attendance, three were retired from racing in 2024, and eight in 2023. Encouragement clinics offer the opportunity for these horses to experience lessons in new environments, without the pressure of a competition energy. With groundwork, flatwork, pole and jumping lessons on offer, this clinic also provided these recent retirees the opportunity to learn and develop further into their off the track careers.

The majority of the horses who attended this clinic never won a race, though many of them raced for several starts. Regardless of racing career, they are now enjoying transitioning into a new life after racing.

On November 23, we also hosted our final clinic at Murray Regional Equestrian Centre. This clinic saw a total of 30 registrations, with beautiful weather and coaching from Colin Chantler, Krystal Wang and Wendy Barker. Of the horses who attended, two were rehomed from the OTTWA Retraining and Rehoming Program – Tis Only A Name and Marcher. It was great to have these horses and their new owners joining in.

From these horses, six retired from racing in 2024, six in 2023, 25 were born in Western Australia, and three never raced at all. With such a wide variety of experience, breeding and careers, it was great to meet and learn about these horses transitions into life after racing.
