Henrietta Lisa | From Broodmare Paddock to Hitting the Trails
Bred to pace, Henrietta Lisa by Modern Art USA, never raced. Owned and bred by Steve Johnson, this 2010 Standardbred mare never made it to the racetrack and was instead retained as a broodmare. Henrietta Lisa is the dam of two foals, both of which were bred by Mr. Johnson.
In 2022, Henrietta Lisa was rehomed to Crystal Starr. As an unbroken mare with limited handling after life out in a herd, Crystal took the time to get to know Henrietta. Although the process was long and tedious, and after months of establishing trust and care, Henrietta and Crystal have since formed a firm partnership.
Together, Henrietta and Crystal compete in encouragement hack shows and trail riding, enjoying their time together. Crystal describes Henrietta as a very brave mare, who is very conscious of those around her. In November of 2023, Henrietta and Crystal attended Murray Horse and Pony Club Encouragement Hack Day where they came away with Reserve Champion Off the Track Standardbred and Champion Pleasure Off the Track Standardbred.
“My favourite accomplishment was cantering around Darling Downs. Henrietta had only cantered twice on the lunge and never with a rider,” fondly recalled Crystal.
Crystal hopes to continue regularly trail riding and attending more shows. They may even attend a few breed shows. Overall, Crystals goal for Henrietta is to be happy and continue on as they are.
OTTWA wish Henrietta and Crystal all the best for their 2024 year ahead!
