Miss Slater | Flashy Miss

By Gold Front Breeding sire Slater, is this flashy chestnut mare, Miss Slater. This 2013 mare was trained by Brian Allen for 21 of her 34 starts, and briefly trained by Lou Luciani, Susan Olive, and Daniel Morton for her remaining 13. Miss Slater retired in 2020 with one win, two seconds and two thirds, and total earnings of $23,750.

Following retirement, Miss Slater (Missy) was rehomed to Kate Lewry. Missy had enjoyed a brief let down after racing, along with the occasional bush ride. While with Kate, Missy was often ridden out through the pines, and began to develop her arena work nicely. The pair dabbled in jumping and even tried their hand at barrel racing, in which Kate believed Missy was quite the fan of.

“Missy was definitely a natural and had a nice scope,” commented Kate regarding Missy’s aptitude for jumping.

After a year together, Kate sadly found herself lacking time for Missy and so the decision was made to find her a new home. Missy was sold onto Skye Kneeshaw, who instantly fell in love with the mare.

Skye leased Missy for six months prior to being given the opportunity to purchase the mare.

“She is the sweetest girl. She will follow me around the paddock, she likes a good cuddle and kiss, and she’s got quite the personality,” Sky said fondly.

Together, Skye and Missy have been developing their partnership and learning to work as a team. Skye described Missy as quite a forward ride, which has been a focus for Skye in her training. The pair have established a strong bond, with Missy’s jump training coming along in leaps and bounds. Skye’s favourite accomplishment with Missy is riding the mare’s first 80cm course as she remained calm, relaxed and confident. Another was their first hack show together at Perth Horse and Pony Club, where Missy came home with a handful of ribbons and a positive first show experience.

Missy and Skye are aiming to develop and compete in dressage and to continue jumping around 80cm courses confidently. Long term, they hope to reach competing in the meter classes, and plan to give eventing a crack.

Skye was the lucky winner of our 10,000-follower giveaway, claiming Missy her first OTTWA rug!

We look forward to hearing more of Missy and Skye’s successes and wish them all the best from the OTTWA Team!
