Proxy | From Tenured Racer to Future All Rounder
Thoroughbred gelding, Proxy, had an extensive racing career before retiring into his off the track life. By the Irish stallion, Authorized, Proxy was bred in 2011 in New South Wales. Beginning racing with NSW trainer, Allan Denham, Proxy’s career was rather hit or miss; with two wins in his first ten starts, along with a handful of midfield and last place finishes. Proxy then transitioned to racing in Western Australia with trainers such as Alan Mathews and Garry Delane. After 111 starts for eight wins and 16 placings, Proxy retired from racing in 2023 with approximately $300,000 in lifetime earnings.
Following retirement, Proxy entered into the OTTWA Retraining and Rehoming Program where he received a full work-up and spelling. In August 2023, Proxy entered into his official retraining where he was prepared for his upcoming off the track career.
Emma Wilson purchased Proxy in November 2023, stating that she was attracted to purchasing a retired racehorse for their versatility, willingness to work and fast learning. Proxy captured the eye of Emma with his beautiful canter and his springy strides.
Since joining forces, Emma and Proxy have been focusing on developing their show jumping and dressage skills, while fine tuning some bit changes to establish a softer contact.
“Proxy is coming along with a soft response to seat aids and is expressing himself more and more as he develops strength and balance in his new role,” said Emma. “He loves to jump and always wants to learn; it has been such a privilege to guide him through each stage of his training.”
Emma and Proxy have attended OTTWA clinics, adult riders and local events together, with their greatest accomplishment so far being a second placing at the Eastern Zone ODE at their first event. Emma commented that Proxy has settled into his new life off the track seamlessly, learning to live in a herd environment while enjoying cantering along the trails with Emma and her border collies.
“He is a very calm racehorse and not much phases him.”
“He is new to herd life and lets even the smallest of our ponies boss him around.”
Emma aims to continue developing their partnership whilst they build their bond as a team. Emma plans to continue having fun together and hopes to continue their progression further into dressage and eventing.
Off the Track WA wish Emma and Proxy all the best with their training and future together!
