Regal Otara | Hard Working Reggie!

Regal Otara is a 2009 born gelding by Ambro Operative USA, bred by Susan Reeves. Regal Otara trained under Brad Chinnery for his total 17 starts, retiring in 2015 with two wins, three second and two thirds. Following his retirement, Reggie as he is affectionately known, was rehomed Sheila Greenwell.

Reggie settled into life with Sheila immediately, becoming one of over sixty horses to reside on her property. Sheila commented that it did not take long for Reggie to prove himself to be quite the character.

“Reggie has never backed down from a task!” Sheila said, and we would be inclined to agree.

Reggie has a full resume of talents that he has developed alongside Sheila, including cattle mustering, show jumping, stunt work, bush riding and a search mount for the SES. Reggie proves time and time again just how versatile standardbreds can be.

Reggie recently attended our OTTWA Classic Clinic in Capel, where he showed off his impressive jumping skills. He clears each jump with at-least an extra inch to ensure he never touches a pole.

Jumping is just one of Reggie’s talents. Reggie’s cool and calm nature means he has been the perfect companion for freshly backed, young horses, a mount in 10th Light Horse Regiment parades and a lesson horse at Horsepower Margaret River. He has also been used in several ceremonial parades, including the re-raising of the 10th Light Horse Regiment parade in 2021, where he was ridden alongside horses, trucks, and marching bands, along with standing for the 21-gun salute. He has also been used in Anzac Day Parades around Perth.

Reggie also briefly became a stunt horse, where he was galloped up and down an airstrip and followed by a drone. This footage was later used as a cinematic backdrop for the stage play, The Lighthouse Girl.

Sheila commented that although she is not a competitive person, she does enjoy being involved in all things horses and likes to have a go at everything. Reggie has certainly helped her experience everything on offer without any fuss.

“I like to promote the breed wherever possible. I feel they are gaining respect at last, but I will continue to fly the flag with Reggie!” said Sheila.

We wish Sheila and Reggie all the best from Off the Track WA, and hope to see them again soon.
